¡La importancia de aprender idiomas!

¡Hola y feliz año nuevo! For this blog post, I am going to talk about the importance of language learning and my plans for the future. I know choosing subjects at school can be quite intimidating, especially when you don’t know the possibilities that each subject will bring you. As a Spanish student I feel like I have a good insight into the benefits of studying a language which I can share with you all.

The opportunity to travel (La oportunidad de viajar)

I think one of the best benefits of learning a language is the opportunities it gives you to travel. If you go on to study a language at university then a year abroad is compulsory which offers amazing destinations to visit. However, if university is not for you there are still thousands of travel opportunities. The knowledge of a language is so valuable in the world of work; so many businesses appreciate when an interviewee has a language qualification. Spanish is the official language of 20 countries and there are hundreds of international businesses that want to employ English speakers with a knowledge of Spanish! Once you are studying or working abroad you can visit so many new places.

The chance to meet new people and discover new cultures (La oportunidad de conocer a nueva gente y descubrir nuevas culturas)

The majority of the world speak more than one language. Therefore, by learning a foreign language you open up the possibility to meet people from all over the world. Although I only speak English and Spanish, during this last year I have made friends from France, Italy, Germany, Czech Republic, Norway and so many other countries all because we can communicate in Spanish with each other. I have learnt so many interesting traditions about countries I previously knew nothing about, and, even better, I now have friends all over the world to visit when I get the chance.

The learning benefits (Los beneficios de aprendizaje)

This last one may seem a little boring but it is so important and under-appreciated. There is so much research which proves that the study of languages benefits all aspects of learning. There are multiple advantages:

  • Improved memory
  • Ability to multitask
  • Enhanced concentration
  • Increased confidence

I think the last advantage on the list is the one I have noticed the most; I have been pushed outside of may comfort zone moving abroad but I came back at Christmas much more confident in my own abilities.

My plans for the future (Mis planes para el futuro)

In terms of future careers, I am keen to work in the translation/interpretation sector. As I mentioned before, there are so many international English speaking countries that need bilingual employees to communicate with their international clients. I’d love to do translation work while living abroad.

Translation and interpretation aren’t the only options though. I have friends out in Spain who are doing a year working in Spanish schools with the goal of becoming teachers after graduation. Another friend is going to progress into an international journalism career which is another job which highly values the knowledge of a language. Some more interesting fields that respect language learners are international aid, politics and tourism.

I hope this blog post has given you some helpful insight into the importance of language learning and the amazing career opportunities there are out there. ¡Buena suerte para elegir vuestros sujetos!
